Newport Hosts The Ocean Race Summit on Ocean Health

Sail News

Hundreds of participants from around the world tuned in yesterday for the latest installment of The Ocean Race’s (formerly the Volvo Ocean Race) Summit Series, which aims to bring the best of ocean racing—leadership, resilience, tenacity, collaboration—to solving the ocean’s health crisis.

The summit, which is the latest event in a five-year ocean advocacy project for the race, is not your average Zoom call. The online platform included eight collaborative “action labs” focused on developing and sharing solutions, as well as Live Q&A and networking sessions. Speakers included sailors Peter Burling, Mark Towill and Charlie Enright, as well as political leaders; Emmy-Nominated TV host and producer, Philippe Cousteau; Fatou Ndoye, Deputy Director of the UN Environment Program’s North American Office; and many other ocean activists.

“For many generations, we have been takers from the ocean, and we have to change our mindset and be caretakers of the oceans,” Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse said. “We can solve this.”
